A Children's Book Review: Shiva's Dance
By Rachel Nichols
Shiva's Dance is a bright and enchanting children's book that tells the tale of how Shiva, often called the Lord of the Dance and also known as the God of Yoga, became known for his joyful dancing that you see portrayed in the classic Shiva statues found in yoga studios and spiritual centers around the world.
Written by Megan Henderson, the story of Shiva's Dance is engaging and entertaining. The tale begins with a quick explanation that helps children and adults alike understand who Shiva is: one of the most powerful gods of the Indian tradition who is responsible for keeping the universe in balance. The importance of staying balanced is a beautiful message to begin to instill in our children!
One of my favorite parts of the book is the last page that breaks down the symbolism of the Five Acts of Shiva. What a wonderful opportunity to teach some yoga philosophy and life lessons to the children in your life (or yourself).
After reading through these Five Acts, there is a little exercise offered for you to do with your kids that I love: How do you perform Shiva's Five Acts in your daily life? What do you create, maintain and destroy? How do you reveal or conceal your true self? You can then invite your child to practice a little Dancer's Pose with you!
With beautiful and mystical illustrations by Darcy Bell-Myers, and a fun story to follow, Shiva's Dance is a book truly appropriate for yoginis and yogis of all ages.
It might be fun to gift this book to your child for Christmas and include a mini Shiva statue to get them excited about the lessons of dissolving what no longer serves you so that you can maintain balance in your life!
