Daybreaker Turns 2!
I had heard about this dance party before work but definitely was not expecting what I experienced! Setting the alarm the night before to wake by 5:45am is definitely not the norm for me, yet alone practicing yoga at 6:30am. As my Lyft pulled up to Audio nightclub I was surprised to find a line. This was not your average line either. Most folks were wearing their usual yoga attire only with a special Gay Pride flare. I certainly know we received a few double-takes from those driving by wondering why such a colorful group of folks were waiting in line at 6:30am! Once inside, I was greeted with hugs from two very festive gals who gave me a silver paper birthday hat and I climbed the stairs to the dance floor.
As we unrolled our mats, we were in for a treat. Today’s yoga was going to be Boxing Yoga. I definitely hadn’t done this before and was very curious what Martine Hamers-Scavenius had in store for us. She took us through traditional poses however, incorporated boxing moves. It was definitely challenging and an interesting alternative to the regular moves. The DJ was playing really great music that didn’t distract from our practice. Luckily, boxing yoga wasn’t as strenuous as it sounded. Everyone was very enthusiastic even though it was so early. The time flew by. Before I knew it, we were done and it was time to get ready to dance.
Slowly more and more colorful folks made their way into the room as the music got louder and louder. One of the unique perks of this event is that it is dry even though in a club. I made my way to one of the bars to pick up some yogurt and a sparkling water. Once nourished it was time to bust a move on the dance floor. Knowing I had to be at work by 9am my time on the dance floor was limited. I may have ventured to this experience alone, but I was hardly alone. I had hundreds of the most colorful new friends who all woke super early to get down on Friday morning. Best of all, everyone was sober!
The music was terrific! Not only were there multiple DJs spinning at the same time there were musicians. Playing along to the tunes were a saxophone and a trumpet player. It felt a little like New Orleans. As they made their way thru the crowd, folks continued to dance and sing. In the colorful crowd, was a mix of folks. Young, old, a furry skunk, Tigger the Tiger bouncing to the beat, Burning Man club kids and even a few jellyfish umbrellas. Who knew so many folks all wanted to dance and party before work!
As I continued to monitor my time, I only wished I could have stayed longer. However, 45 minutes on the dance floor by 8:15am wasn’t too shabby. I gathered my belongings and made my way down the stairs. Once outside in the bright sunshine, you never would guess what was happening back inside. I proceeded down the street on my way to work when I bumped into a friend. He questioned my whereabouts so early and dressed in crazy clothes. I briefly explained and we both had a laugh. It definitely was a great way to start my day and end my week!
