Yikes! Who Knew Working From Home Could Impact Your Yoga Practice Like This?!

More of us than ever have started working from home this past year. While that's something many of us have been crying out for, some surprising detriments are making themselves known as a result.

Luckily, these kinks are nothing that we can't work through, and many of us are already finding ways to get by, but of everything that's changed, our hobbies and habits have taken the worst hit. Notably, activities like yoga, which were once a weekday staple, have often fallen off the to-do list in place of our new-look work commitments.

Given that yoga helps your physical and mental health, this is a problem, especially as we're all moving less and need those benefits more. To help you get yoga back on track, at last, we're going to consider why working from home has hindered your efforts here and what exactly you can do about it.

Factor 1 - You have less time

In theory, cutting the commute seems like it'd leave more leisure time, but studies have widely shown that this isn't the case. In fact, on average, employees have started working around 1.4 days extra each month than they did pre-remote working. A lot of this seems to stem from the fact that there's more imagined pressure to work outside of the 9-5. Hopefully, this will change as we build healthier boundaries, but right now, it means that you have way less time for yoga. Combat that by increasing your accountability —arranging yoga dates with friends (over Zoom, of course) or making a specific time to get to your mat, even if that is during your lunch break.

Factor 2 - You're feeling the effects of a static lifestyle

Yoga is a fantastic way to address the challenges of a static lifestyle, but it can also take a hit if the aches of sitting in your office chair are too severe. This has always been the case, but it's way worse now that we fall out of bed and into our offices. Addressing those aches head-on is the best way around this setback, either by booking an appointment with a chiropractor or investing in an ergonomic desk chair. Pair these with proper warmups and a regular yoga routine, and even moving less shouldn't see you losing out.

Factor 3 - You've sacrificed your studio

An astounding amount of yoga studios have been handed over to home offices this past year, and this, too, has seen many of our practices sliding. After all, much like not having a dedicated space to work, not having anywhere to do yoga can make it tricky to get into the right mindset. What's more, the suddenly work-like feel of the space you used to use leaves it out of bounds even after you finish for the day. Instead, you may find it worthwhile to take your yoga practice outside, either into your garden or, if they're running in your area, to an official yoga class that sees you creating a brand new space in your life for a positive yoga practice.
